Hey, girls, hope you all are doing very well. The other day, someone asked me how I got into a career in the beauty and fashion field. I was excited to see that someone was so keen about finding their niche in this industry, and I thought I should share the answer I gave her with all my readers.
Know What Your Area Of Interest Is…
Do you like styling hair more, or would you rather have the ability to cut hair beautifully? Or do you have a fetish for pretty hands and feet? Perhaps creamy, smooth skin is what you believe to be the utmost thing of beauty and your preferred field of work. So the first step in deciding to get formally into the fashion industry is to identify your area of interest.
…And Then Look For Degrees and Programs
You can choose a specialization in hair cutting, or in hair styling, go for skincare specialization, or study to become a nail technician. Once you’ve decided which specialization you’d want to go for, select an accredited program in cosmetology, esthetics or nail technology from a state-licensed school. If clothes are what you’re interested in, go for a program in fashion or textile designing, or, like me, go to an arts school to get the hang of creativity that’s a must in this field. For aspiring photographers, degrees in photography are a great idea.
After that, shortlist Some Accredited Beauty Schools
Area of interest? Check. Degree level? Check. Beauty School? Hmmm, time for some more research. Make sure that the school you plan to get enrolled in is accredited and licensed by the particular state you wish to work in. Otherwise getting a license to practice in this industry will be quite a challenge. I’ve done some research and come up with some schools from the American Association of Cosmetology Schools. Take a look:
- Xenon International Academy, Kansas
- Hair Professionals School, Illinois
- Federico Beauty Institute, California
- Regency Beauty Institute, various states
- Virginia College, various states
- Miller-Motte Technical College
These days, many top schools offering degree programs related to the beauty and fashion world are also offering online programs. Perhaps you’d like to check out if those will work better for you.
Don’t forget to have Fun along the Way!
Never forget the reason you are getting into this career in the first place. You’re creative, artistic and like to try new things, and so should your approach towards your studies in beauty. Have fun as you study and enjoy the new things you’ll discover – these will make quite the difference in your professional life. Trust me.
I hope I have been able to address the queries of my young and not-so-young followers who wish to get into this field professionally. Don’t hesitate to let me know if you need any more guidance. Cheers & toodle-oo to all
