As if seeing pyjamas sprout up right left and center in the public wasn’t enough for my faint heart, a designer friend messaged me a couple of days back saying, “We have an official Pyjama day on Friday!” What, are you kidding me?
It turns out many people will be putting on red plastic noses and wearing pyjamas to work today in lieu of Red Nose Day. Through this, Comic Relief plans to raise money to send to people in more than 27 countries.
I’m all for using fashion for a good cause, but…this?!
Nightwear To Daywear, Ummm This Is Not What We Meant….
Fashion designers have been stating this forever: the dresses, makeup and accessories to invest in are ones which, with a little modification, let you transform your look from day wear to night wear. I think somebody tried to pull the joke on us by bringing nightwear to day time!

I mean, why, oh why, would you first wear something that shows that you just stumbled out of bed and then spend ages dressing up your jammies to make sure you don’t look like you just stumbled out of bed…?
The Revenge of the Pyjamas
Alright, so if you have a body that can rival that of Michelangelo’s David or if you design clothes for A list celebs for a living then you CAN get away with wearing PJs to three fashion shows and still have people drool over you (yes, it’s Marc Jacobs we are talking about!) but for the rest of us, it is one tricky trend to pull off.
Actually, calling it a tricky trend to pull off might be an understatement, but there’s no denying the fact that the fashion fraternity loves it…Rihanna, Stella McCartney and Kate Hudson are all avowed fans of their jimjams, fashionistas Sofia Coppola and Viviana Volpicella and even Louis Vuitton have all jumped on this crazy pyjama bandwagon.

If You Must Wear Them….
I think I might have just signed off my fashion career by writing this heading, but no matter how much I sigh and squirm, I know there will still be many who will lounge around in PJs at work today, and since the designer in me cannot let all you lovely ladies look sloppy so here’s what you can do:
- Steer clear from going for a matchy matchy appearance, and wear the pieces as separates.
- Pair your pyjamas with wedges and a sweatshirt.
- Not cotton tracksuits please, only silken nightwear and that too in florals, paisleys, geometric patterns or monochrome stripes.
- Layer it up with a blazer…
- Or accessorize with a bright envelope clutch.
Holy Cow! Coco Chanel Wore Silk Pyjamas In Public Too….
I’m speechless actually… but Chanel got me thinking that maybe it’s ok to take a fashion break once in a while, especially when you have the comfort of knowing you can cover it up by claiming it’s for a good cause…or maybe not, what do you say?
